Rhode Island Teacher Education (RITE) Certification

The RITE program is intended for those who wish to complete a certification-only program without completing a degree program. Secondary education content areas are: biology, chemistry, English, French, general science, history, mathematics, physics or social studies or you can earn certification in world languages and teach all grade levels. A B.A./B.S. degree in the subject to be taught is required for admission.

Second Bachelor's Degree Program

Program choices for a second bachelor's degree mirror the undergraduate program choices​ and are open to those who have earned a bachelor’s degree. The first step is to apply to ΢ÃÜȦ using the Common App. Once admitted, applicants meet with their advisors to learn about their plan of study, program coursework and FSEHD application requirements.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  1. A completed application form accompanied by a $50 nonrefundable application fee. (RITE program applications may be requested by emailing the associate dean at fsehd@ric.edu.)
  2. A résumé outlining educational and work experiences.
  3. A written statement of educational philosophy.
  4. Official transcripts of all undergraduate records.
  5. Evidence of degree completion, with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher and evidence of specific content with the appropriate content GPA. See appropriate department.
  6. Two Disposition Reference Forms in sealed envelopes. These forms must be completed by individuals in the following categories:

Admission Process

  1. Once all application materials have been submitted, the associate dean will send the following materials to the chair of the Educational Studies Department:

    • The original application form.
    • The statement of philosophy rubric.
    • Copies of all other application materials.
     
  2. The department chair will give the materials to the appropriate advisor for review.
  3. The advisor will review the materials and create a plan of study with the applicant. When the plan of study is complete, the advisor will send the following back to the associate dean’s office:

    • The completed application form signed by the program advisor and the chair of the Department of Educational Studies.
    • A scored statement of philosophy rubric.
    • A completed plan of study, signed by the student, advisor and chair of the Educational Studies Department.
     
  4. Once these materials are returned to the associate dean’s office, the plan of study will be signed and an acceptance letter along with a copy of the plan of study will be emailed to the student, advisor, the chair of the Educational Studies Department and the Educational Studies assistant.

Application Requirements

Persons holding baccalaureate degrees from regionally accredited institutions may apply to ΢ÃÜȦ for a second undergraduate degree. At the time of application, students must have completed a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (3.0 for nursing and 2.7 for radiologic technology majors). Previous college coursework must be comparable to coursework currently taught at ΢ÃÜȦ.

To apply, students should submit:

  1. A completed Common Application and ΢ÃÜȦ Supplement, available at , and a nonrefundable $50 application fee.
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges attended, showing the date their bachelor's degree was earned (transcripts for ΢ÃÜȦ graduates will be printed by the Admissions Office).

Admission Requirements

Second-degree students follow a plan of study created with their advisor, which includes a list of program coursework and other requirements leading up to FSEHD program admission and program completion. Admission requirements may mirror undergraduate admissions; however, there will be differences.

Rhode Island Background Check

Every FSEHD student who works with children/youth/adults must maintain a current BCI from the Attorney General’s Office. The BCI is required before entering a classroom or community space, virtually and/or face to face, whether observing, tutoring, teaching and/or participating in any type of community activity. BCIs will be submitted and maintained in Chalk and Wire.

GPA Requirements

Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. (Once you are admitted to ΢ÃÜȦ, your cumulative GPA is based on your grades in your ΢ÃÜȦ coursework.) If you meet all of the admission requirements except for your GPA, you may apply for conditional admission to a program​.

Foundations Course Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete FSEHD course requirements (if listed on your plan of study) and Foundations (FNED) course requirements.
  2. Pass FNED 101: Introduction to Teaching and Learning. This is a requirement for all incoming freshman and transfer students admitted to ΢ÃÜȦ in Fall 2019 and later.
  3. Earn a grade of B- or better in FNED 246: Schooling for Social Justice.
