Students are also encouraged to refer to Campus Police web content and communication outreach for campus and neighborhood crime information; videos, such as "Run, Hide, Fight," created by Homeland Security for Active Shooter situations; crime notices; and timely warnings and emergency notifications through campus-wide emails or the ΞΆΓάΘ¦Alerts instant messaging system.

Personal Safety on Campus

To assist ΞΆΓάΘ¦PD in maintaining a crime-free campus, all members of the college community are advised to follow these safety recommendations:

  • Stay Alert: Present yourself as alert, assertive, self-confident, and in control. Individuals who appear lost, confused, or passive may be more vulnerable.
  • Be Aware: Maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times.
  • Stick to Safe Areas: Use well-lit and well-traveled areas, especially at night.
  • Travel in Groups: Walk or jog with a companion after dark.
  • Prepare Your Keys: Have your keys ready as you approach your car or building.
  • Request Escorts: If you feel uneasy, request an escort.
  • Stay Calm: If confronted by an attacker, avoid panicking. Focus on escaping the situation and drop any items that may hinder your escape.
  • Avoid Unknown Drinks: Do not accept drinks from strangers.
  • Elevator Safety: Avoid entering elevators with individuals who seem out of place or exhibit strange behavior.
  • Use Bathrooms Wisely: Exercise caution in isolated bathrooms.
  • Report Harassment: Report any harassing phone calls, emails, or other communications to Campus Police.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: Inform Campus Police of any suspicious persons or activities.

Personal Property Protection

  • Secure Items: Lock personal items in your vehicle’s trunk, as thieves can act quickly.
  • Avoid Leaving Valuables Out: Do not leave your wallet, handbag, briefcase, laptop, or cell phone unattended.
  • Lock Valuables: Keep personal valuables and cash locked and out of sight.
  • Minimize Cash: Avoid carrying large sums of money and do not display it.
  • Protect Identification: Do not attach your ID card to your key ring, as it may lead thieves to your home or vehicle.
  • Engrave and Record: Engrave your items with an identifying number and keep a record of serial numbers for stolen property.
  • Report Lost Keys: Immediately report any lost college keys to Campus Police.
  • Avoid Hiding Keys: Do not hide extra keys in your office or vehicle.
  • Carry Valuables Securely: Always carry your purse tightly clutched or under your arm.
  • Use Laptop Locks: Employ a lock down device for your laptop.
  • Keep Spaces Secure: Never leave your vehicle or office unsecured.
