Opportunities for Education and Internships Abroad

Shinn Scholars have performed on stage in Florence, interned for a magazine in London, shadowed healthcare professionals in Chile and Peru, learned to speak Japanese in Tokyo, and so much more. In its 32-year history, the Shinn Fund has awarded more than 100 scholarships to students to take classes and complete internships in 31 different countries. Its purpose is to support ΞΆΓάΘ¦ undergraduates in planned studies outside of the United States.

Eligibility

Any undergraduate student in any field is eligible for this funding, regardless of what country they want to go to. Applicants must:

  • be in good academic standing
  • complete an application by February 15
  • include a quality proposal and clear budget plan

After applications are received an awards committee of seven people, including one recently returned awardee, will decide to whom Shinn funds will be awarded.

Founder Ridgway F. Shinn, Jr.

ridgway shinn

The Ridgway F. Shinn, Jr. Study Abroad Fund, maintained by the ΞΆΓάΘ¦ Foundation, provides income to support undergraduate students in planned study outside the United States. Established in the 1987-88 academic year by Ridgway F. Shinn, Jr. through the generous support of many of his friends, colleagues, and former students, this fund marked his retirement from 29 years of service at the College. During those years he was professor of history, the first chair of the Department of History, the first dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and vice president for Academic Affairs.

He always hoped that undergraduates might have the opportunity to study and live outside of the United States for a period of time as a way to expand their learning. The Study Abroad Fund is helping that hope become reality!
