- The History of Black Nurses in RI on Exhibit at Ȧ
Learn about the profound impact Black women leaders have had on the nursing profession and on the broader Rhode Island community.
In commemoration of Women’s History Month, the Zvart Onanian School of Nursing has unveiled a captivating exhibit titled “Of Healing Hands and Tenacious Heart” on display in the lobby of the nursing wing of Fogarty Life Science throughout the month of March.
Developed in collaboration with Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies Sherri Cummings and the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, this exhibit highlights the rich history and inspiring stories of African American nursing leaders in Rhode Island.
Cummings, who conducted the research and curated this exhibit, encourages the campus community to take a moment to visit the display.
“This display highlights the role Black women in Rhode Island have played in the nursing profession since slavery,” Cummings says. “It also highlights the obstacles they faced when trying to seek nursing education in the state and the wider New England region during the interwar years.”
“We extend a warm invitation for you to explore this noteworthy display at your convenience,” says Interim Dean of Nursing Justin Dilibero. “It not only pays homage to the accomplishments of these remarkable individuals but also serves as a testament to the invaluable contributions they have made to the nursing profession.”
