Purposeful Leadership

The role of a leader is complex and sometimes ambiguous. Leaders shape the culture and the outcomes. Leaders can make the difference or make no difference at all. Leadership is one of the least taught subjects but perhaps one of the most puzzling and arguably one that needs significantly more attention in today’s dynamic organizational cultures.
I often ask my staff, my students and friends; will doing what you suggest make it better?
There are times when we purposefully let situations play out so the participants in the scenario develop new skills, learn how their actions impact the outcome or just because there isn’t a better alternative. But when we do intervene, it’s important that we step back and ask the crucial question, will my intervention make this better?
Purposeful leadership is the act of exerting leadership towards a specific outcome. In this workshop, participants explore the dynamics of leadership towards a broader understanding of how different leadership interventions elicit specific outcomes. Participants will gain an understanding of their own tendencies and explore how to utilize various leadership strategies with their staffs, students, constituent groups and others.
Inspiring, Empowering and Developing Rising Stars

Identifying and developing employees who will grow into the next generation of institutional leaders is essential to the long term health of any organization. But it can be difficult to know how to coach these ‘rising star’ employees to reach their potential. In this session, supervisors will learn the skills to:
- Understand your employees career objectives, and connect individual career aspirations to future opportunities within the institution
- Build employee loyalty in order to keep high performers invested
- Provide opportunities for employee growth while they remain in their current position
- Facilitate mentoring relationships that can help your employees reach the next level
Dr. Peter A. Langton started as therapist and quickly transitioned to working with organizations to select, develop, and coach leaders. After over 20 years working in Training and Development, Human Resources, and Strategic Planning, Dr. Langton saw the need to focus on developing confident leaders as an organizational priority.
Dr. Langton has served as a Training Coordinator, Director of Training and Development, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, Vice President of Human Resources, and Executive Vice President in various industries serving retail, insurance, finance, manufacturing, and higher education. Dr. Langton has also served as a Visiting Professor at Wheaton College and is currently an Adjunct Faculty in the Management Department at Stonehill College.
Through his various positions and experience, Peter has seen firsthand how hiring and developing the right person can be the spark the moves an organization from mediocrity to success. Recognizing and Embracing Generational Diversity

Overall Goal
Participants will learn to recognize instances and impact of generational diversity, identify their
personal conflict management style and to use their knowledge to practice effective communication
and engagement within the workplace.
Learning Objectives
- Learn the key characteristics and impactful events of five generations: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X , Millennials, Generation Z
- Identify personal preferred communication style using the Communication Style Assessment
- Gain understanding about the benefits of effective communication to build positive relationships.
- Learn, understand, and practice communication techniques such as active listening, open-ended questions, summarizing and reframing.
Tricia Driscoll B.A., M.A.T. In her 25+ years of non-profit experience. Tricia has worked to help individuals and group develop positive communication and leadership skills. She has a B.A. in Sociology-based Human Relations from Connecticut College and a M.A.T. from RI College. She is a trained mediator, also certified in Workplace Mediation. Tricia facilitates basic mediation training, peer mediation, leadership development, conflict resolution and communication training.
